Holiday Party at Schwab’s 2004

The next Nebraska Coast Connection Hollywood Salon is our Holiday Party: — Monday, December 13th, 2004 — This month only we won’t meet at CBS, but at a cool new spot in Hollywood. You’ve heard the legend of Schwab’s being the place where stars were discovered…now come be discovered yourself at the new incarnation of Schwab’s of Hollywood! Schwab’s Restaurant and Bar is in the Sunset+Vine complex at 1521 North Vine. Your donation will get you a drink at the bar, appetizers, raffle ticket and a classy atmosphere to celebrate the holidays with your Nebraska friends. There will be live music from Melissa Bernadt, Janubia and other talents from our group, plus a visit from Santa and other surprises. For holiday gift-giving, we’ll have NCC Got Corn? t-shirts available, plus Janubia’s new CDs, each for only $10. You’ll also have the chance to join us as a Champion for 2005.  We’ll start a bit later than normal…at 8pm.  The party will be winding down around midnight, but you can stay until they kick us out of the bar.

CD Release Party for Janubia

This is a FIRST at a Salon. Monday, we’re hosting a CD Release Party for a brand new album by one of our own! Be the first to hear the music of Janubia (aka Robin Banks), and get the skinny on how it all came together. From Nebraska to Hollywood, Robin has been singing up a storm, as well as lighting up our lives as a web artist. This is her first album, called Mother Tongue, and she and her partner/musician/co-writer Alex de Rafols have designed the marketing as well as the awesome interactive website. (With clients like Lisa Marie Presley, they know a thing or three about great websites!) Check out the website at: www.janubia.com. Linda Voorhees

Monday, October 11th, 2004 — Our special guest will be LINDA VOORHEES,  a professor of screenwriting at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, and no stranger to Nebraska. Linda is Prof. Lew Hunter’s teaching partner at his twice-annual Superior Screenwriting Colonies, and she has family ties there as well.  An accomplished writer, director and producer, Linda most recently is credited with this year’s Raising Genius, about a boy who locks himself in the bathroom to work out math equations on the shower wall. Linda is a top-notch script doctor, instructor and industry professional with a knack for comedy and a unique perspective on the craft of screenwriting that make her a favorite of UCLA film students.  Learn all about Linda’s secrets to great screenwriting, plus meet your friends at the Salon…Columber Day – Monday night, October 11th.

OK, folks…this is one HUGE Salon. Ready for this? Five guests in all, each a successful hyphenate, all with tons of talent in making their projects happen. All coming to the Salon to meet YOU!

In a long-overdue NCC appearance will be Casting Director Gennette Tondino, partner in Tondino/Warren Casting, responsible for casting such films as COMMITTED, BLOODHEAD, PALMER’S PICKUP, Sigfried & Roy’s THE MAGIC BOX, and many more. Gennette also produces the wildly successful Seenwork Company Workshops. Now’s your chance to schmooze it up with a casting person who really knows her stuff.

Gennette’s partner Actor Randy Crowder (RUSH OF THE PALMS, NIGHT HUNTER) will also be there, with his writing/directing partner Kerry Logan (“LIFE’s CALLING,” also starred onstage in NYC’s “Tony & Tina’s Wedding”). Randy and Kerry are prepping their next feature to start in October.  And if that’s not enough, Actor Tom Katsis will also be showing his latest Abe Lincoln impersonation in a new short film, BUSH VS. LINCOLN. Writer/ Director Pat Battistini will be on-hand also for your questions.

Amy Duzinski

IMPORTANT NEWS!! In case you haven’t joined us in the past couple months, Salons are now in a new location at CBS-TV. Follow the new green signs to the Cafe on the First Floor.

Our guest in August is Amy Duzinski, Director of Development for Parkchester Pictures. Parkchester is the production shingle of Jerry Offsay, former head of Showtime, with first-look deals at CBS, Paramount and Showtime Networks.

Amy is a graduate of the University of Colorado and the UCLA Masters Program in Producing. She got her start as an editor and producer in industrials and documentaries, and now shepherds writers and directors through the process to make features for Parkchester.

Make sure you make it to the August Hollywood Salon on Monday… you don’t want to miss a thing!

Perry Garrett from NBC/Universal Studios

IMPORTANT NEWS!! Salons are now held in a new location at CBS-TV. Follow the new green signs to the CBS Cafe on the First Floor.

Our guest in July will be Perry Garrett from NBC/Universal Studios.  It’s a long way from the Midwest to heading part of a major studio, but Perry Garrett has made it look almost easy. Fresh out of Iowa, Perry began his Hollywood career as a tour guide at Universal Studios.  While honing his screenwriting skills, he moved into Universal’s Studio Operations, and now he heads the whole Production Services Department for NBC/Universal.

Perry has written his own screenplays, does story analysis for various production companies, and for the past four years has written, directed and produced several well-received short films for the 48 Hour Film Project and National Film Challenge.  From every angle, this is one guy who knows his way around making movies. Come and meet Perry at the next Salon, and maybe he’ll help you make YOUR next film.

You definitely won’t want to miss our next Salon…Monday!

Our guest in June will be the person who makes CBS shows look great. Dawn Schaefer came out from the University of Nebraska only a few years ago, and now heads up the network”s production design.  Her credits include the CAROL BURNETT specials, CBS’s ON GOLDEN POND, and the spectacular live SURVIVOR reunion shows. Come and meet Dawn and learn the secrets to art direction for television.

Jon Bokenkamp

Please join us NEXT MONDAY at the Hollywood Salon.  Our guest will be screenwriter and director Jon Bokenkamp, writer of the new Warner Bros thriller, TAKING LIVES, opening nationwide this month.  TAKING LIVES stars Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke and Kiefer Sutherland.  Hailing from Kearney, NE, Jon has had a meteoric rise to the top of the film business, first as director/writer of BAD SEED starring Luke Wilson, and now writing for stars like Julia Roberts and Diane Lane.  Jon also recently became a father — so come meet him and help celebrate both his new babies, his movie and his kid!

Screenwriter Jon Bokenkamp’s film, TAKING LIVES, opens Friday night.  This big Warner Bros thriller stars Angela Jolie, Ethan Hawke and Kiefer Sutherland.  An NCC group is going together to see the 7:55 screening at The Grove’s Pacific Theatres (3rd & Fairfax, in LA).  Meet in the lobby between 7:00 and 7:30, the movie starts at 7:55pm.  Tickets are $11.75/person.  To purchase advanced tickets by telephone, please call Pacific Theatres at The Grove (323) 692-0829 (they will charge you a buck extra over the phone).  Or you can just show up, buy your own and take your chances.  The theatre DOES expect this film to sell out, so come early and we’ll brave the lines and try to save seats together.
