Hollywood Salon Party

The VIP Room is decked out.  The chefs and bartenders are prepping your holiday libations and food.  The musicians and comedians are warming up, and Santa is wrapping your raffle prize.  It is Monday, December 10th, 2007.  Are you ready for the Nebraska Coast Connection Hollywood Salon Party tonight? It all starts at 8pm at the beautiful new BANK HEIST club and restaurant in NoHo.  We’ve added even more entertainment:  live music from Brad Colerick, joined by Boo Bernstein & Charlie White, as well as from The Pirates Charles late into the night.  Improv comedy by Some Assembly Required.  And the premiere of Cullen Wright’s new short film, “Holiday,” starring and crewed by Nebraskans. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, please call the NCC Hotline before 5pm: 213-368-4NCC.   (You can show up at the door, too, but we’d love to know you are coming). We want everyone who wants to come to be there…so if price is any obstacle, please let us know. For every half-hour shift you put in at the check-in table or during set-up or clean-up, we’ll knock $5 off your admission. Johnny Rodgers

It’ll be a night of Two Legendary Nebraska Johnnys at the Hollywood Salon TONIGHT: Monday, November 12th.  Our special guest tonight will be one of the greatest players in Husker Football history, Johnny Rodgers. Johnny was the first Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska, and played during some of the most exciting years of Nebraska football under Coach Bob Devaney in the late 60s and early 70s. He is the author of “Era of Greatness,” his new book about the players and coaches that ESPN has called the best college football team of all time. Johnny is starting a new entertainment enterprise in Omaha, and will be coming to his first Salon to make connections with all of us in the Nebraska Coast. Don’t miss the chance to meet a real Cornhusker living legend.  And help us honor another legendary Nebraska Johnny, the late great Johnny Carson, as we celebrate the recent opening of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at UNL. We’ll have a full report and photos from the grand reopening of the Temple Building, where big renovations in the theatres and new film production facilities were just dedicated. Come see how Johnny Carson’s gifts to his old alma mater have transformed the place where he got his start. Crystal Carson

The Nebraska Coast Connection Hollywood Salon is TONIGHT, Monday, October 8th…ATTENTION ACTORS, WRITERS & DIRECTORS:  Monday’s very special Hollywood Salon will be a chance for you to hone your craft, show off a little, and get some live feedback about your work. Our guest will be Acting Coach Crystal Carson, one of the top coaches in LA for almost 20 years, and creator of “The Actor’s Mind” visualization technique.  Crystal’s many clients in television, film and stage learn from her the secrets they need to be a masterful actor who books the job. Monday night, we’ll be devoting a big part of the Salon to a mini-workshop, where everybody can participate.  ACTORS:  Crystal will be offering coaching sessions at the Salon, focusing on cold-reading and audition technique that will get you the callback.  WRITERS:  We’ll be using material supplied by you.  Bring copies of one page of dialogue from one of your film or tv scripts (must have only two actors in the scene, please.)  DIRECTORS:  You’ll get to see all the actors in a cold-reading audition, plus a chance to see how they take your notes.  (Bring your own script pages for the actors to work, if you want.)  It’ll be a hands-on, real-world audition experience — among friends! — that you won’t want to miss.  Monday, October 8th at the Hollywood Salon at CBS-TV.  See you there!

CARSON SCHOOL OF THEATRE & FILM AT UNL Anyone attending the dedication events for the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at UNL next weekend (Oct 12-14)?  It will be the grand-reopening of the newly restored Temple Building, Howell Theatre and new black box theatre and film stages. http://www.unl.edu/finearts/carson2007.shtml NCC’s Todd Nelson will be going back to represent the Hollywood Nebraskans, and he wants to take your well-wishes to the Carson Family and other dignitaries.  How did that place affect YOUR life?  Have a great story about the Temple or Howell stage that you care to share?  We’ll be collecting your congrats messages and Temple remembrances at the Salon Monday night, or you can email them to Todd at howdy@nebraskacoast.com.  A full report on the dedication events, with photos of the new Temple, will be part of the NCC Salon in November.  Come to the Salon to meet friends. Craig Shoemaker

It’s going to be a very funny Salon tonight…Our guest will be comedian Craig Shoemaker. From stand-up to radio, TV and movies, Craig has been making people laugh his whole life. Craig Shoemaker is a sitcom waiting to happen, says the New York Times.  Named Comedian of the Year by the American Comedy Awards, he has also won two Emmys, a Crystal, and was voted one of the top 20 stand-up specials on Comedy Central. He has made hundreds of appearances on shows like The View, Comic Relief, Comedy All-Stars and Hollywood Squares, and films such as Safe House and Scream 2. He toured with Ray Charles and Kenny Loggins, co- hosted a show with Magic Johnson, and has performed at comedy clubs across America.  Come to the Salon Monday and you just might find out what makes a comedian tick. Mari Weiss

The NCC Hollywood Salon is TONIGHT: Monday, June 11th…Voiceover artist Mari Weiss makes a return visit to the Salon tonight.  Mari is a William Morris talent and has been a working voice actor for over 17 years. She’s done hundreds of commercials you’ve heard including Blue Cross, the voice of Hometown Buffet and the latest McDonald’s campaign. Her promo work includes ABC and the Oxygen network. Animation credits include Happy Feet, HBO’s Crashbox, Duckman and many others. Don’t miss this chance to hear Mari’s secrets of success, and get your own voice working for you. She’s coached many actors to successful careers of their own. (Her next intensive voiceover workshop is June 24th, and you can sign up at the Salon!)  We’ll also have a visit from Jay Skovec who will tell us all about this summer’s Pageant of the Masters in Laguna. Jon Bokenkamp

Coming up Monday, May 14th…We welcome back to the Salon Screenwriter/Director Jon Bokenkamp.  You can see Jon’s latest work on a movie screen near you – he was the original writer and has the “Story By” credit on the thriller PERFECT STRANGER, starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. And tonight, you can see the man himself at your friendly neighborhood Hollywood Salon at CBS.  Jon hails from Kearney, Nebraska, and after graduating from USC film school, went on to direct the documentary AFTER SUNSET: The Life and Times of the Drive-In Theater (seen often on American Movie Classics), and then the psychological thriller PRESTON TYLK (aka BAD SEED), starring Luke Wilson.  In 2004, he adapted the novel TAKING LIVES into a feature film for Warner Bros starring Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, and Kiefer Sutherland. Most recently, Bokenkamp adapted NIGHT AND DAY YOU ARE THE ONE for Universal and reworked the adaptation of the novel NEED which is set to star Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts.  Tonight, come hear Jon tell us all the ins and outs of life as a Hollywood screenwriter. Film Commissioner for the State of Nebraska, now she’s become a filmmaker herself with an homage to Nebraska art guru, Norman Geske.  She’ll be showing excerpts from her feature documentary, MY FRIEND, NORMAN: THE MAN FROM ABERDEEN, about the impact one amazing man has had on the artistic and cultural heritage of Nebraska. Gustav’s Brush Premiere

Coming up at the NCC Hollywood Salon for Monday, March 12th…It’s the premiere of a Salon-Connection project!  We’re going to be screening a short that got its start right here at the Hollywood Salon. GUSTAV’S BRUSH is a 16 minute narrative short that came out of connections made at the NCC.  Written and directed by Mark Albracht, the film was shot over four days in June 2006 with a budget of $2,000. Post production has just wrapped, and the film will be debuting at the March Salon. GUSTAV tells the story of a friendship between a boy and a painter.  In addition to writer/director Mark Albracht, the NCCers who worked on the film include Tom Katsis (producer, actor), Ben Wilson (actor, PA), Adam Vogt (PA), James Elden (actor) and Robin Bealmer (composer). Many of them will be on hand to take their bows and your questions.  Lots of schmoozing, snacks and Nebraska raffle surprises will follow.  Please RSVP by 3pm today…the next Salon is TONIGHT: Monday, March 12th.
