From the Omaha World-Hearald, January 8, 2011, By Bob Fischbach.
Lights Out is the story of a struggling former heavyweight champion tempted to return to the ring to support his wife and daughters, a part McCallany says he was born to play–as a kid in Omaha McCallany took up boxing with his younger brother, now-deceased Golden Gloves champ Michael McAloney and as the son of show biz parents McCallany was drawn to acting at an early age.
Among his inspirations: “Alexander Payne was a year ahead of me at Prep,†McCallany said of the Oscar-winning director-screenwriter. “He was an honors student, considered brilliant. I was considered a juvenile delinquent who would amount to nothing.â€
McCallany is the son of legendary actress and cabaret singer Julie Wilson, an Omaha native, and the late Broadway actor and Tony-winning producer Michael McAloney (“Borstal Boyâ€).
