OMAHA, Neb. —

Steve Henning said Pacific Palisades was a “vibrant, tight-knit community” that, in some ways, reminded him of growing up in Kearney, Nebraska.

His family of three, including his wife Stacey Bisson, an Omaha native, and their 16-year-old son, left the same day the fire started on Jan. 7, grabbing only essentials and expecting to return in a few days.

A little more than four hours later, their home burned. From looking at camera streams from their home, they knew it didn’t look good as the power went out and the connection was lost.

Henning and Bisson met while going to school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They bought their home in LA’s Palisades neighborhood in 2001.

Now, they’re trying to find a new home in the area, but find the new market is making that extremely difficult.

It’ll take time to replace belongings.

“My wife and I, it took us three days to buy just some basic clothing because you go in there, and then you just ruminate on everything you left behind, and you just want to get out,” Henning said.

And while the insurance will help, some things can’t be replaced.

“Everything we took was wrong,” Henning said. “But at the end of the day, we have our dogs. I’ve got my family, we’ve got great friends and a strong network, and we’ve got a lot of love. I think that’s all we need.”
